Guru Purnima (Poornima)
Guru Purnima is a traditional Hindu festival which has included on the list of Sindhi Festival List since last almost two centuries and in last four five decade have gained popularity to become integral part of annual Sindhi Tipano – reflecting important days of year.
If we go by history this festival is dedicated to ancient Guru Shishya tradition and associated with Maharshi Veda Vyasa who is creator of Vedas, most scared religious books of Hindus and ever first knowledge books of human society. Maharshi Veda Vyasa also have credit of writing 18 Puranas and Mahabharat. Guru Purnima is celebrated ahead of festival month Shravan on Purnima [Full moon day] of Hindu month Ashad [usually June- July month of Georgian Calendar]. This is also an important day for the Buddhist all over the world as history says at Sarnath, Lord Buddha have preached his ever first religious teaching to his followers on this day. In the country like India, having agriculturally based economy this festival holds yet another importance as this day is considered as the beginning of rainy month Shravan. According to ancient Hindi poetry
गुरु गोविन्द दोनों खड़े, काके लागु पाय ?
बलिहारी गुरु आपनो , गोविन्द दियो मिलाय।
(My religious master and every mighty God, both are in front of me, whom should I bow first? I thank to my religious master who have provided ma with opportunity of God being in front of me.)
If we go by the Sanskrit meaning of Guru, the word narrates about the person [religious master] who guides his disciples from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge.
Guru Purnima - Sindhi Community
Though there are no documentary profs but still it is believed that celebration of Guru Purnima started in Sindhi community when Satguru Swami Sarvanand started to offer ritualistic respect to his religious master Satguru Swami Teoonram Maharaj on this day.This is fact that in Sindhi community Guru Purnima celebration is popularised by Sant Asaram Bapu, who along with many thousands of his disciples, started tradition of bowing before his Guru Swami Lila shah on this day.
As Presently in Sindhi Community there are many religious Panths and people are looking at many Sindhi Saints as their religious and spiritual master and guide hence in due course of time Guru Purnima has become an important Sindhi Festival.
