Sindhi Language - Sindhi Literature

Historic Backdrop of Sindhi Language & Literature

History of Sindhi Language
This is historic fact that even in the Vedic era Sindhi language was in existence as many structures found from the excavation at Mohenjo Daro and Harappa are indicating towards the script of Sindhi language. Another evidence is that Sindhi is neither a cast nor a religion in the ancient time group of Hindu people living on the shores of River Sindhu (Indus River), originating from Mansarovar lake area in Himalaya ends at Arabian sea passes through Kashmir and Sindh region, were identified as Sindhi Hindu because of their own language and cultural heritage.
This might be unfortunate that but the fact will be remained unchanged that due to geographical location Sindh become first target of all those who wish to conquer India and establish their own Kingdom. Since the start of seventh century, almost entire period till the start of British rule (East India Company 1858-1947) most of time Sindhi remained under the rule of Afghans and Muslims. This long rule by the followers of another – non-Hindu – religion has not only affected the socio-cultural heritage and development very badly but the historical and linguistic assets of Sindhi community were destroyed along with forced religion conversion. A huge number of Sindhi people accepted Islam probably this the reason when we look at greatest trio of Sindhi literature Shah – Sami and Sachal we find that among three only Sami is Hindu and rest two are Muslim.
Sindhi Language and Script
Even during the British rule things doesn’t turned favorable for development of Sindhi language and literature as in spite of opposition of Hindu Sindhis British government in 1853 accepted Perso Arabic Script for Sindhi language as official script. In the 1947 when country got freedom from British rule and become divided into two parts India and Pakistan, and people of Sindhi community were forced to leave their ancestral home land along with several thousand of other Hindu people to migrate to India.
In India education department of Government of India agreed to accept recommendations of a language committee to use Devanagiri script instead of Arabic script for Sindhi language on 9 March 1950 but on 14 March 1951 government has changed acceptance of this recommendation and keep use of both Arabic and Devanagiri scripts for Sindhi Language, which is still in practice even after inclusion on Sindhi language to Eight schedule of Indian constitution on 10 April 1967.
