Biography / About - Ishwar Moorjani
Ishwar Moorjani, famous Sindhi Short Story writer & Novelist is one such Sindhi writer who has contributor to Sindhi literature by his skill & perfection of Story writing. In connection to Sindhi Short stories few other names come to my mind are Gobind Malhi – though many consider him Novelist as Number of his Sindhi novels is much higher but still his stories were not only effective but still impresses a common Sindhi reader and two very popular woman Sindhi Short Story writers Popati Hiranandani & Kala Prakash.
Out of 12 published books of Ishwar Moorjani 8 are Sindhi short stories collections this is sufficient proof for the mastery level of Ishwar Moorjani in the field of story writing. Yet another evidence is that in the year 2019 Sindhi Sahitya Akademi Award Awarded to Ishwar Moorjani for Jeejal – a Sindhi short stories collection. This might be noted that in Sindhi word Jeejal is used for mother so we can say Goddess Mother Saraswati, Goddess of wisdom has blessed her devotee son with blessings of fame & name.
Ishwar Moorjani born on 17 July 1942 at Tando Adam [Sindh] is among the class of Sindhi writers who have a suffering childhood due to forced migration of Sindhi community to India in 1947. Father Lalchand and other family members first came to Alwar but afterwards Shifted to Sanganer a township quite close to Jaipur in Rajasthan. In 1951 Moorjani family decided to shift Ahmedabad in Gujarat for better facilities and better business opportunities.
Ahmedabad being a city with comparatively higher and concentrated Sindhi population so few newspapers in Sindhi were being published from Sindhi & literary activities were also bit higher. School going Ishwar found it interesting to read Sindhi literature and attend literary programs. He was highly impressed with Sharnarthi a short story of Gobind Malhi.
After Getting degree of B.A. Ishwar Moorjani, who was active with business though of paying a bit more attention towards his writing and contribution to Sindhi literature, as he was impressed with Short Stories so decided to concentrate in this genre.
Out of total twelve published books till date Ishwar Moorjani have wrote Nine Short Story Collections, Two Novels and One book of Essay collection. Except Bandh [Hindi Short Stories] and I Take the Baby [English Novel] remaining ten books are in Sindhi.
First book of Ishwar Moorjani Zahir [Sindhi Short Story Collection] was published in 1972 where as his last published Sindhi Short Stories Collection Jeejal was published in 2018 for which he was honored with Sindhi Sahitya Akademi Award for year 2019.
Ishwar Moorjani is a Sindhi Short Story writer of the era when Sindhi literature was feeling a kind of vacuum for a very shorter period but along with him a few other good Short story Sindhi writers like Guno Samtani, Mohan Kalpna, Lakshmi, Khilani, Hari Himthani, Indira Vaswani, a few names I might be missing have created a healthy competitive environment for this genre of Sindhi literature. Ishwar Moorjani concentrated on basic of presentation style, language commitment and philosophical base for short story writing hence he contributed not in great number [eight short story collections] but still his every story was touching life & hearts of common Sindhi & critics.
